June 2010 – Scouting Trip to Haiti.
Across Borders may be delving more into nutritional supplementation. Initially, we
would focus our efforts in South Africa and Haiti. The situation in Haiti is still dyer and
most humanitarian groups have had to discontinue or slow down efforts for one reason
or another. Most groups pulled out of the country months ago. Currently, Across Borders
is not facilitating any projects in Haiti, but we have robust opportunity to distribute a
healthy supplement throughout Haiti due to our relationship with a handful of community
and government organizations.
Mark made a few calls and then hopped a plane down to Haiti. We reinforced our
partnerships within the Ministry of Health, the Haitian government, multiple hospitals,
children’s homes and NGO networks. Essentially Across Borders could develop one
main distribution center where 4-6 satellite centers would pick up their allotment of
supplement. Our organization has also made several strategic contacts with medical
professionals throughout Haiti who are ready to help us with this distribution and monitor
the progress of individuals within each satellite center.
Mark spent 5 days in Haiti, touring various parts of the ravaged country. He reported
about the rancid stench that filled the air everywhere they drove, the families living
and playing inside abandoned and dilapidated buildings, and still the immense beauty
in various parts of the countryside. Unfortunately many of the people here living in
desperate conditions, and situations can turn intense and dangerous quickly when dealing
with any type of commodity distribution. Any operations Across Borders decides
facilitate in Haiti will be done in a safe and controlled environment. While our scouting
trip to Haiti was very productive, it was difficult to see first-hand the level of despair
among the people trying to rebuild their lives there.
We will continue to keep you updated on our progress and plans for Haiti.
